Arriving at Château Guiraud via the long tree-lined drive is a sure way of leaving behind your everyday reality. The further you go up the drive, the more you are calmed by the arch of plane trees, accompanied by the instinctive desire to slow down to fully appreciate the approach to the chateau. The buildings at the end of the path are beautifully simple and discrete.
However, at this point, it is still hard to believe you are arriving at Château Guiraud in Sauternes, classified a first growth in the 1855 classification.
Surronded by vines and trees, it seems as though the estate is cut off from the rest of the world. You need to go close to the cellars to be able to view the wild open countryside and glimpse the steeple in the village of Sauternes below.
One begins to understand Guiraud upon entering the chateau. Everything there is simple, efficient and functional, almost to the point of austerity. However, when you observe the same thing with a glass in hand, they become much clearer. The wine's enchanting bouquet of white flowers, acacia, hawthorn blossom, lily, and tuberose are complemented by overtones of forest floor, spice, frehly-ground white pepper, tea, and saffron. Noble rot has worked its magi, and the bouquet slowly and tantalizingly reveals its full subtlety. Guiraud is deliciously bodied, rich, and velvety on the palate. The fruity flavours are combined with an inimitable botrytis and candied fruit character.
The exuberant flavours burst forth with such sensuality that one hesitates before swallowing to prolong the taste sensations. Guiraud's sweetness melts in the mouth, the aftertaste is always fresh. The initial taste impressions come through again marvellously on the finish, and the pleasure goes on and on. This is the key to understanding Guiraud. It is all about pleasure. Everything possible is done with one ideain mind: to make the greatest possible wine, year after year, for the enjoyment of wine lovers around the world.
Visitors come to Guiraud not quite knowing what to expect but always leave utterly enchanted.
